An update

Filed under: Notes — Spencer Crone @ 01:46

So it’s been 5 years. And 15 days.

For anyone still following this in any capacity imaginable, I commend you for your patience. I should also probably scold you for your stupidity or laziness.

Either way, it’s true that I’ve neglected these “posts” for so long. No excuses, life just got in the way somehow. This is all to say that yes, I am planning to start this up again in a slightly new form: more regular, more introspective, not necessarily about any particular person, place, or thing, just about whatever happens to cross my mind. More so as a journal for myself than anything else (if you’re reading this I can assure you only tens of others are).

The inspiration for resuming this weblog originates in a unique fashion. Whilst digging through the Internet Archives, fondly remembering a few of the blogs I used to follow in the early 2000’s (when the web was a bright new light, at least to me) I came across a few links to Douglas Bowman’s (stopdesign.com, @stopdesign) early blog posts. Suddenly it all made sense. You don’t need to compose a full, 4 page article, rigorously fact-checking and painstakingly editing every time. Whatever is on top of mind will suffice. Among the list of inspiration includes Khoi Vinh’s Subtraction (subtraction.com, @khoi) and Dave Shea (mezzoblue.com). The list goes on and right now I can’t even think of them all, but as I do I will certainly give them their due. The spontaneous musings from these blogs in the early days of the web had, and continue to have, profound impact on me.

So with that said, I find myself full of a new energy, eager to share my thoughts, feelings, and views with anyone who happens to stumble upon this humble web diary about my goings on in life as a boring Torontonian. Oh, I’ll also have a few other more provocative things to say as well.

The newest version (6.0) is currently in development and will be released very soon…I promise! It captures the original essence of this blog in its infancy, while expanding on the latest and greatest HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript technology, all with a contemporary yet timeless look and feel.

Life has been quite busy at the moment overall, so unfortunately I can’t promise a solid date on the introduction of Ver 6.0…you’ll just have to look for it.

Here’s to seeing you in less than 5 years time.

Daylight saving time is hurting you

I haven’t “sprung forward”. I refuse to. I decided to keep my watch set true to standard time last year, and I’m proud to say that I lasted through a whole period of Daylight Saving Time without making the jump. Sure, it wasn’t easy living an hour behind most people. When I’m told, for example, there is a meeting at 2, I automatically must remind myself that the meeting is actually at 1. Most people don’t understand why I do this. Well, I do it mostly because I loathe DST, not just because it takes one hour of precious sleep away from me, but because it is an archaic practice that is not only rather pointless, but ultimately causes more problems than it purports to solve.

Why I am not supporting Earth Hour

Now first, don’t get me wrong. I’m not one of these people who thinks global warming is nothing more than a fabricated theory. I also don’t litter, try my best to keep my own pollution levels down, and rarely use much electricity if I can help it. That’s right, I think the earth is great, and I try not to destroy it whenever I can. But I won’t be one of the countless blind sheep around the world, flicking off my lights and sitting in the dark tonight at 20:30 simply to make a “statement”.
